You know how it goes … you’ve been going all day, your calendar is packed, your inbox is somehow more full than it was this morning, you’ve answered approximately 47 audio messages, and you’re pretty sure you haven’t sat down since 8:00 a.m.
Naturally, this means you had a productive day, right? Welllll, not necessarily. Today, we’re talking about the confusion that often comes with being busy vs. being productive. From the outside, they look nearly identical, but the results are very different.
Busy means you’ve got a lot going on day-to-day, but productive means you’re spending time on the right things that lead to long-term growth for you and your business.
Learn to prioritize.
Not every task deserves the same amount of your time. As a business owner, it’s especially important to look beyond your immediate to-do list and consider what will actually make a difference, whether that’s tasks that develop your team, spending time strengthening a relationship, or making a decision you’ve been putting off. Your job is to know what deserves your time.
There will always be another email, another meeting, another small task waiting for you … your job is to know what deserves your time.
Delegate when you can.
Stop and ask yourself, does every decision or question really have to go through me? Delegation is one of the biggest, most important changes you can make. Trust your team with responsibility and give them the opportunity to own their work.
Find one thing you can take off your plate and delegate today. Remember, you don’t need to be involved in everything for everything to run well!
Protect your time.
Your time is one of, if not THE, most valuable resource you have. Treat it that way! Set boundaries around your schedule and create time to focus without interruptions. And (this is a big one!) allow yourself to step away when needed.
If there’s one thing we know it’s that some of the best ideas probably won’t come while you’re answering emails at 6:30 p.m. They’re more likely to come when you finally have the space to think!
Remember, being busy shouldn’t be the goal. Take a step back and look at where your time is actually going. Are you spending your days reacting to whatever lands in front of you, or are you intentionally working toward things that make your business better? What matters is the progress you made on the things that matter most.
