Motivation doesn’t always come easy. In fact, oftentimes it feels like a fleeting spark—strong and bright one moment, then dim the next. However, in order to reach our goals, motivation is essential for every single one of us … whether we feel like working toward those goals or not!
Whether you’re working on personal growth, tackling a big project, or simply striving to be the best version of yourself, staying motivated is a challenge. Here are tips to help you reignite that inner fire and keep it burning strong every day.
Connect with your "why."
The first step to staying motivated is understanding why you’re pursuing your goals in the first place. When the road gets tough, and you don’t know if you want to keep going, your “why” will help you continue pushing forward.
How do you go about discovering your “why” if you haven’t already? Ask yourself these questions:
- What drives me?
- What gets me out of bed every morning?
- What am I passionate about?
- What am I doing when I feel the most fulfilled?
- Who makes me want to be better?
- What are my values?
Seeing a common theme among your answers to these questions? That’s your “why” … write it down, think about it daily, and use it as motivation to keep going!
Embrace discipline over motivation.
Staying disciplined means pushing yourself forward, regardless of how you feel. We’ll let you in on a little secret: There will be days when you don’t feel like working. There will be days when laying on the couch sounds a whole lot better than getting up and working toward your goals. Those days happen to every single one of us. But on those days, rely on your discipline to carry you through. Build habits that support your goals, and soon enough, taking action will feel automatic.

Positivity matters!
You’ve probably heard this before, but the people, environments, and content you consume truly have the ability to either fuel or drain your motivation. Surround yourself with positive influences—people who believe in you, places that inspire you, and content that encourages growth. Whether it’s audios, books, or media (we have a whole post on this, here), choose to engage with things that uplift and motivate you.
Track your progress.
Keeping track of your progress, even the smallest improvements, will keep you motivated. Use a journal, an app, or a calendar to mark each step you’ve completed. Seeing your progress visually reinforces how far you’ve come and serves as a powerful motivator when you start to feel stuck!
Rest, recharge, and take care of YOU.
Alright, time to talk about burnout. You knew it was coming, right? The truth is, working hard is great and so essential to your growth … but do you know what else is essential? Giving yourself the time and space to rest, recharge, and come back ready to tackle your goals!
Make time for the things that bring you joy. Do you like to listen to music? Read? Work out? No matter what it is that you like to do, schedule those things into your days and weeks just like you would schedule appointments or meetings. You’ll be surprised at how just a few minutes for you in the day makes a big difference!
Be ready to pivot.
The journey to any goal is rarely a straight line. Roadblocks happen, and when they do, it’s important that you’re adaptable and ready to pivot and find new ways to reach your destination. We know, easier said than done, right? Here are pointers to help you out:
- Seek feedback and help from those around you.
- Keep learning and growing!
- Be open to changing the way you’ve always done things.
- Become a risk-taker.
Staying motivated isn’t about being in a constant state of high energy or excitement. It’s about cultivating habits, discipline, and a mindset that pushes you forward even when times are tough. Implement these strategies to reignite your inner fire and maintain motivation through the ups and downs. Keep going—you’re closer to achieving goals than you think!
