Communication Skills for Entrepreneurs

If you’re reading this post, you’ve probably got a business. And we can all agree that having a business is super fun and exciting, right? You get to bring your ideas to life, connect with people, and build something that’s actually yours … who doesn’t love all that?

At the center of your business is a little thing called communication (and by “little” we mean the reallllly important thing great businesses thrive on!). Communication is how you turn a casual conversation into a customer and a small idea into something people genuinely care about.

Communication is your secret weapon.

As an entrepreneur, you wear a lot of hats, from working with customers, to problem solving, to leadership; the list goes on. And good communication plays into every single one of these roles.

  • Build trust with others
  • Avoid those all too painful “that’s not what I meant” moments
  • Get people excited about your business and what you’re selling!

So yes, communication is important. Let’s jump into how to build your skills and develop a communication style that works for you and your business!

Say less, mean more.

Your business means a lot to you, and that makes it really easy to over-explain. But the more you simplify your message and say what you actually mean, the easier it is for people to follow along and feel inspired to actually take action.

Know your audience.

The way you talk to your lifelong best friend isn’t the same way you’d talk to someone you’re meeting for the first time. Be aware of what your audience needs from you and tailor your communication accordingly. More on how to do this in this post!

Listen.

Communication isn’t just in what you say. A huge piece of it comes from being a great listener.

When you’re really paying attention, you start to pick up on what people actually need. You’ll notice hesitations, gaps, and opportunities to respond thoughtfully rather than reactively.

Good listening makes your communication sharper and more effective. It also makes people feel heard, which is something you can’t fake (and something people really remember!). Read our post for active listening tips.

Check in with yourself.

You may be reading this post thinking, I already do all this, I’m a great communicator! And if that’s you, GREAT. But every once in a while, it’s worth stepping back and checking in.

Are people asking you to clarify things more than they should? Are you putting off any conversations that would actually move things forward?

We all need a gut check every so often and tightening up certain areas of your communication might just make a noticeable difference in the way your business runs.

Keep it human.

Nothing will ever be perfect, and your communication doesn’t have to be, either. What truly matters when it comes to the way you talk to others is that you’re being clear and real. People are more inclined to connect with something they understand and trust.

Keep it simple, keep it honest. That’s the type of communication the best things are built on.
